The Sony World Photography Awards for 2022 are now open. Firstly it is free for all photographers to enter and there are various competitions to choose from. We’ll show you a break down of what choice there is for you and what categories are available. Please note all the competitions are now open for entries, but take notice of when the deadline is. Each competition has a different deadline date for entries.

There is a choice of four competition categories to choose from: Professional, Open, Youth and Student. Also there are two initiatives, the Alpha Female Award and the Latin America Professional Award.

Professional Competition

The professional competition has 10 categories to choose from and is judged on a body of work. Photographers need to submit between 5 to 10 images (5 being the minimum, 10 being the maximum). The submissions need an accompanying series description. You can enter each of the ten categories but take note, each series needs to be different. If you enter the Professional competition, you can’t enter the Open or Youth competitions.

The closing deadline for submissions for the Professional competition is 14th January 2022 at 13.00 GMT.

Professional Competition Categories

The ten categories for the Professional Competition are:

  • Architecture and Design
  • Creative
  • Documentary Projects
  • Environment
  • Landscape
  • Portraiture
  • Portfolio – Images need to have been taken within the last three years, with 5 images from 2021.
  • Wildlife and Nature
  • Still Life
  • Sport

 

Professional Competition More Information

Free to Enter
Open to anyone, submit 5 to 10 images per category.
Ten categories available to enter
Awards for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place photographers, plus up to 7 shortlisted photographers per category.
One overall winner receives the Photographer of The Year title
Deadline January 14 2022, 13.00 GMT

There are several prizes available, including the overall winner receiving $25,000 (USD). Category winners will receive Sony digital imaging equipment.

Some of the Rules for Professional Competition

Entrants must be over 18.
Images should be no smaller than 1MB and no larger than 5MB. Images should be JPEG files.
All images must be saved in the sRGB colour model and EXIF data must be left in the image file.
Entries will be judged between January 17, 2022 and January 31, 2022.
A shortlist of up to ten photographers from each category will be selected and announced prior to April 2022.
The winner of each category will be notified by email
You may enter a minimum of five (5) and a maximum of ten (10) images per category. You can enter as many categories as you wish. However you cannot enter the same series or images into more than one category.

Open Competition

Firstly the Sony World Photography Awards 2022 Open Competition format is single images across 10 categories. We’ll list the categories below, but bear in mind, overall the judges will be looking for good composition, great creativity and clear photographs. If you decide to enter the Open Competition, you cannot enter the Professional or Youth Competitions as well.

Again the Open Competition is free to enter and is open to anyone submitting single images taken in 2021. There will be 15 shortlisted photographers per category.

There are awards for category winners and one overall winner receives the Open Photographer of the Year title and a prize of $5,000 (USD)

The deadline is January 7, 2022 at 13.00 GMT

Free to enter
Open to all members of the public
Entries must be submitted by January 7 2022 13.00 GMT
Images must be taken in 2021

Each entrant can submit up to three images for free. The images can be entered in different categories or all images can be entered into a single category. Judging will be based on the single image and not the series of images.

Student Competition

Firstly the Sony World Photography Awards 2022 Student Competition is open to academic institutions worldwide. Secondly it is free to enter for anyone aged 18 to 30, who is taking a full-time photography program at a higher education level. The deadline for entrants is 30 November 2021.

Students must answer a set brief with 5 to 10 images.

Images must be taken between June 1 2021 and November 30 2021.

There will be up to 10 shortlisted photographers and one overall winner receives the Student Photographer of the Year title.

Therefore the overall winner, titled Student Photographer of the Year and their University/ Institution will receive a prize of Sony digital imaging equipment amounting to a combined total of €30,000

Youth Competition

The Youth competition is open to 12-19 year olds and has seven monthly competitions from June – December. With each month focussing on a particular theme. Entries must be submitted by the last day of each month. The seven monthly winners will them compete to be Youth Photographer of the Year.

So the overall winner will be titled Youth Photographer of the Year and receive Sony digital imaging equipment.

Latin America Professional Award

All photographers based in South America entering bodies of work (5-10 images) to any of the ten categories in the Sony World Photography Awards 2022 Professional competition, will be considered for the Latin America Professional Award.

*Please note: to be considered for the Latin America Professional Award, participants must have the nationality of one of the following Latin American countries and reside in any of these during the period of the award (June 1, 2021 – January 2022) Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru.

Alpha Female Award

All women photographers entering any of the ten categories in the Sony World Photography Awards 2022 Open competition will be considered for the Alpha Female Award. Categories to choose from are Architecture, Creative, Landscape, Lifestyle, Motion, Natural World & Wildlife, Object, Portraiture, Street Photography and Travel. Entry is free and submissions are judged by a panel of experts. Images will be rewarded for their power to communicate a visual narrative with excellent technical and creative skills. Providing a powerful platform to empower female photographic talent by promoting their work to an international audience. This award aims to counterbalance the dominate voices within photography industry, ensure diversity and create a space where women photographers can excel.
