The 2020 ING Discerning Eye  Exhibition – Calling for Entries

The 2020 ING Discerning Eye exhibition is now open for submissions. There is a new virtual format to The Discerning Eye 2020 Exhibition, with artists able to showcase their work in a virtual gallery. It is a fantastic opportunity with a range of prizes, from medium and regional prizes and including the ING Purchase Prize worth £5,000.

Submissions are now being accepted online until 1 October 2020 5pm. Artists can submit up to six works, from various media: paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, photographs and films. These works must be for sale and must not exceed 50cm (20”) in any dimension.

Annual show of Small Works, showcasing established and emerging artists 

This annual exhibition has been running since 1990 and offers emerging artists the opportunity to have their works hung alongside well known established artists. A panel of six prominent art world figures – two artists, two collectors and two critics – select works of art for the yearly exhibition. 

The ING Discerning Eye exhibition, virtual gallery will open on 19 November and run until 31 December 2020. It will be showcasing the artists’ shortlisted works with commentary and introductions by the selectors and a new platform for viewers to buy the artwork directly. All exhibiting artists will be included in a fully illustrated print catalogue. Awards will be given out to the winners in a virtual prize giving.

Therefore this years selectors are artists Dale Lewis and David Remfry RA, collectors Beverley Knight and Mervyn Metcalf, critics Jo Baring and Tabish Khan.

Before Submitting your work

There are some rules to consider before submitting your work. Firstly the exhibition is open to artists born or resident in the UK only. All works must be for sale, with a maximum size of 20 inches (50cm) including frame. Also all works must be an original creation by the artist, prints (including prints from I-Pad drawings) photographs and sculptures are accepted. Finally all entries must be submitted online in the form of digital images, with the following information: Title, Medium, Year, Dimensions, Price and whether it is unframed or framed.

Photographing and printing your artworks before selling

Get your works professionally photographed, before sending them to your buyer. So then you have a digital image file ready to use for giclée prints of your artworks. Fine art giclée prints of your photography and artworks, are a great way to earn extra income. Jackson’s Painting Prize 2020

Artists, are you looking for a new challenge in 2020? Why not try entering some painting competitions this year? We’ve stumbled across the Jackson’s Painting Prize which could be a great opportunity for you.

Call for entries are now open for this fantastic competition and they remain open until the 4th March 2020. The best bit is, there are some excellent prizes up for grabs too! Jackson’s state that this painting competition was, ‘established to champion exceptional artworks made by international creators at all points in their career’. Therefore, even if you’re just starting out, there is no excuse to not give it a go. Furthermore, artists of any age can enter too.

The Prizes

There are several prizes available for the winners. The overall first prize is awarded an astounding £5,000. There are also prize pots of £1,000 each for both the Peoples Choice Award and the Emerging Artist Award. Additionally, there are six category prizes with awards of £500 each. The categories are as follows;

  • Animal
  • Portrait/Figure
  • Landscape/Cityscape/Seascape
  • Still Life/Botanical
  • Abstract/Not Representational
  • Scenes of Everyday Life

The winners (apart from the Peoples Choice Award) will be selected by a judging panel of six well-known names within the art industry.

Important Information

There are some key points you should be aware of if you’re considering entry to the Jackson’s Painting Prize. Firstly, each artist can submit up to five pieces of work. However, a positive is that unlike many other art competitions, there is no age limit on the pieces you submit.

To enter your works, an image of your work will need to be uploaded to the Jackson’s Painting Prize website, ensure you’re not including the mount or frame in your image though as your entry will be disqualified if you do!

The Longlist & Winners

One of the great things about this art competition is that you don’t have to wait too long to find out if you’ve been successful! The longest will be announced on the 17th March 2020 with all the winners being announced by the end of April 2020. Full details of the competition schedule can be found here.

National Trust Photography Competition

The National Trust have launched their annual photography competition for an image to adorn the cover of their 2020 members handbook. It is also the National Trusts 125th anniversary, making this a super and special opportunity. Calling all photographers, both amateur or professional, why not enter this fantastic competition and be in with the chance of winning. Not only does the winner have their photograph printed for all members to see (over 5 million people) but they will also be the recipient of £1,500 credit for National Trust holiday cottages. There is also a runner up prize of £500 credit for National Trust holiday cottages.

The details

Entries are now open until the 1st September so you still have a few weeks to upload your entries. The judges are looking for a stunning image which show how the countryside and landscaped gardens or historic houses they look after can spark adventure, inspire us and change the way we feel.

Your photograph must have been taken in 2019 (you’ve still got a few weeks to take some day trips!) and be in a landscape format. You can enter up to 10 images each so there is plenty of opportunity to be in with a chance. It’s also worth noting that the focal point of the image should be in the right hand side of the picture. The Discerning Eye Exhibition

The 2019 ING Discerning Eye annual exhibition is now open for entries. This annual exhibition which has been running since 1990, is a show of small works which has been independently selected by six prominent figures from the art world.

Overall, this exhibition provides the opportunity for lesser-known artists to have their works hung alongside contributions from internationally recognised names. The works are judged by six individuals from the art industry which is made up of two artists, two collectors and two critics, some of which are; artists Gill Button and Charlotte Hodes, collector; Tim Rice and the critic; John Penrose.

The closing date to submit your entries is 7th September 2019, so there is still plenty of time! There are some basic rules you need to be aware of before submitting your work though; the exhibition is only open to residents of the UK and you can submit up to six pieces of work. This includes both 2D and 3D pieces. Each submission costs up to £15, however, there are discounts available on this depending on how you submit your work, more information can be found here. Furthermore, you work must be for sale if entering. To submit your works you can there are drop off points across the country, these all take place during early September and the locations include; Penzance, Birmingham, Edinburgh, London, Plymouth, Exeter and more!

Not only will the selected work be exhibited in the Discerning Eye exhibition held at the Mall Galleries in London between the 14th and 24th November 2019, but there are some big prizes up for grabs, including;

The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2019

The Sunday Times Watercolour competition, which is now in its 32nd year, is open for entries. This annual competition is one of the UK’s most prestigious competitions for contemporary watercolour painting and any water-based media is accepted including acrylic, gouache and inks. The competition ‘aims to celebrate and reward excellence and originality in the medium of watercolour‘. The deadline for entries is the 17th June 2019 with the shortlist being announced on the 25th June 2019.
250 works will be shortlisted initially and these will be narrowed down and the final 100 will be selected on the 10th July. The shortlist will be selected by a panel of industry experts and there will subsequently be a touring exhibition of these final pieces.
Entries into this competition must be submitted online in the first instance, with artists submitting up to four pieces each. Entry costs are £15 per works and they must have been completed within the last three years. The competition is also only open to those living within the UK.

The Prizes

The following prizes are up for grabs: London Wall Partners Prize of £8,000, second prize of £3,00, third prize of £1,000 and there is also a young artist prize (those aged 30 or under) which consists of £250 and £250 worth of artist materials. Winners will also be announced in The Sunday Times Magazine and on The Sunday Times website.

The Exhibition

Following on from the above, 100 pieces will be selected for the exhibition. The touring exhibition commences in September, starting at The Mall Galleries in London. During October and November, works will be displayed in Trowbridge and will subsequently be displayed in Guilford during November through to January 2020.

SFS Introducing from Explorers Against Extinction

A new art competition has been released for 2019, raising vital funds for a worthwhile cause. Artists are invited to submit their works into SFS Introducing before the 19th July 2019. All works submitted will help contribute towards this campaign so why not participate?

Explorers Against Extinction

Explorers against Extinction is a wildlife conservation campaign organised by registered UK charity the Real World Conservation Trust. The primary aims of the campaign are to raise awareness about the threats facing the world’s most iconic species and their habitats while also raising significant funds for nominated projects pivotal in the battle to protect them.

SFS Introducing
A new competition to 2019, SFS Introducing invites all to submit artworks which include an endangered species (we’ve found this list on the WWF website of endangered animals.) Any artists, whether professional or hobbyist, over the age of 16, can submit their work, produced in any medium, however, the piece must be either A3 or A4 in size.
The best 100 artworks will be selected by a panel and added to the core Sketch for Survival touring collection. However, no work submitted and entered will go to waste. All will still contribute to the campaign and will be submitted to the Sketch for Survival Affordable Art Gallery which will then be sold. All pieces of art will contribute to the campaign and help raise vital funds. Everybody who submits an artwork will receive a Certificate of Participation from Explorers against Extinction.
Awards

There will also be a series of awards through the SFS Introducing competition. These include the following;

Artist of the Year: This winner will receive their award at the Royal Geographical Society in London on 14th November in addition to a £500 voucher to spend on art materials and equipment from GreatArt and a free annual subscription to either The Artist or Leisure Painter magazine.

The Leisure Painter’s People’s Choice Award; this work is chosen by the public, both through an online portal and through the exhibition tour. The winner will be featured in a Leisure Painter magazine article and will receive a £500 voucher for GreatArt. In addition to this, they will also receive an annual subscription to either The Artist of Leisure Painter magazine.
The Artist Award; will be selected by the editorial team at The Artist magazine. The judges will decide who captures the best spirit of the campaign. This winner will be featured in The Artist and will receive a free annual subscription to either The Artist or Leisure Painter magazine.
The Exhibition

Sketch for Survival along with the SFS Introducing pieces will tour the UK between September and November 2019, visiting five different venues and finishing at the Royal Geographical Society in London.

Landscape Artist of the Year 2019

The Sky Arts competition; Landscape Artist of the Year is open for entries. This competition gives you the opportunity to win a £10,000 commission for the British institution’s permanent collection in addition to £500 of art materials from Cass Art. The deadline for entries is the 11th May 2019 so there is still some time to get your application together!

Stunning locations across the whole of the UK are used within this competition.

For the application process you will need to submit the following:

  1. One photograph (Low-resolution Jpeg) of a landscape painting created by You (“the Landscape Entry”) – This image must show the complete painting, and you must send no more than one image of the Landscape Entry.
  2. Photograph(s) (Low-resolution Jpegs) of at least one and up to two further works of art by Yourself (“the Additional Works of Art”) – these needn’t be landscapes, and you must send no more than one image of each Additional Works of Art You submit.
  3. One passport style photo of yourself.

You will also need to complete a short application form which includes questions such as the following;

Please tell us about your background as an artist and your other general interests and if you have won or been shortlisted for any other art competition, please specify which competition(s) and the level of your involvement.

Society of Wildlife Artists – 2019 Exhibition

The Society of Wildlife Artists will soon be accepting submissions for their 2019 exhibition; The Natural Eye. Pre-selection will be open from 12pm 29th April 2019 through to 26th July 2019. The Selection Committee (which is formed from artist members of The Society of Wildlife Artists) announce their selection choices on the 2nd August 2019. Following on from this, the exhibition runs from the 24th October 2019.

The Exhibition

This year the annual exhibition requests works that depict wildlife subjects with originality, creativity and high levels of technicality. Subjects can include any non-domestic animals, including, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, crustaceans and insects. Both two and three dimensional pieces are accepted. Pre-submission is through an online portal on The Mall Galleries website.

Artists, 18+ can submit up to six pieces of work each which must have been completed within the last three years. Entry is £18 per submitted works or £12 each for those aged 35 and under.

Awards & Prizes

Works which have been selected will be in with the opportunity of winning one of the following prizes or awards;

  • The Terravesta Prize: £2,000 for the best work exhibited.
  • Birdwatch Artist of the Year Award: £1,000 plus Swarovski equipment.
  • RSPB Award: £500.
  • Birdscapes Gallery ‘Conservation through Art’ Award: £700 split between the artist and a conservation charity of their choice.
  • Mascot Media ‘Nature in Print’ Award: For the most original, unusual or effective interpretation of the natural world using traditional printmaking techniques. The winning artist will receive £200 and their choice of 10 current Mascot Media books.
  • Dry Red Press Award: The winning work reproduced as a greetings card.

The Society of Women Artists 2019 Exhibition

Call for Entries

The 2019 Society of Women Artists Exhibition online pre-selection process is open on Thursday 28th February 2019. Entry will be open to both members and non-members and this will be the 158th exhibition from the society.

The Society of Women Artists

The Society of Women Artists (SWA) is a British art body dedicated to celebrating and promoting fine art created by women. Originally founded as the Society of Female Artists in 1855, it offered women artists the opportunity to exhibit and sell their works. Annual exhibitions have been held in London each year since 1857.

The 2019 Exhibition

The 2019 exhibition will be held in the renowned Mall Galleries, London and  artists can each submit up to four pieces of work. All medias are applicable, including; painting, pastel, drawing, mixed media and sculptures. Entry is open to both members and non-members with entry at £15 per work or £8 for those artists aged 35 and under.

All those wishing to submit their works must digitally upload their file by noon on the 20th June 2019. You must upload your work online through The Mall Galleries submission system here. Those fortunate to be selected will be notified on the 28th June 2019. Subsequently, following on from this, the exhibition will be open to the general public from Tuesday 24th September to Sunday 29th September. Additionally, all works within the exhibition will be for sale.

Awards

There are a variety of awards available and highlights include; the Princess Michael of Kent Award, The SWA Fine Art Award (£500), The SWA Special Fine Art Award (£2,000), Karin Walker Young Artist Award (£1,000), Derwent Special Fine Art Award (£500 of art materials) and the St Cuthberts Paper Mill Award. In addition to the, Jackson’s Art Supplies will be sponsoring the People’s Choice Award.
